Cheers for the advice guys. I've looked at the suggested options and it seems that Cherbourg - Poole with Brittany Ferries would suit us the best. Celtic Link is more or less half the price, but the times are not good!!! Any useful tips on getting from the Vendée to Cherbourg would be gratfully received! Many thanks in advance.
Obviously one would go Nantes then Rennes and then direction Caen. Our sat vav would have you go towards St Lo and then towards Cherbourg.
We used to live in the area (Percy) and two weeks ago I went off at jct 38 through Percy towards St Lo. At St Lo take the road towards the left towards Cherbourg. (the one by the huge Civil Service building) and then the other side take the dual carriageway at Carentan. However looking at earlier posts the link between St Lo and Carentan may now be in place.
On your arrival at Cherbourg simply look for the overhead signs and there is also a new link road in place for the port.
I much prefer Cherbourg but when we travelled there were limited sailings and we were on the early morning sailing to Poole and thus stayed in Cherbourg overnight.
It depends where you are in the Vendée - picking up the motorway to Angers and then going to Laval, through Mayenne and up to Domfront, Tinchebray, Vire St Lo and Cherbourg is probably the most direct route.
