Help! Advice please on how to get back to Devon from La Tranche sur Mer around Xmas time for a week by car. It seems Brittany Ferries aren't offering a service back to Roscoff in between Xmas and New Years. Is the only option to drive via Calais??!!!

You are thus faced with either Portsmouth or Poole if still running. Poole obviously is from Cherbourg.

However it is a bit of a drag from either Portsmouth or Poole to Devon.

Now the bypass round St Lo is finished it is not a bad drive up to Cherbourg and it is easy enough from Poole to the south west. You can get onto the A303 at Yeovil without encountering too much traffic!

You could look to see if there are any ferries running to the south west from St Malo via the Channel Islands but I would think it is expensive.

Hi Devonian was up that way a couple of weeks ago and yes obviously the existing by pass around St Lo was in being it did seem they were still working on the road.

Has it now really finished for if it has next year I will seriously think of leaving from Cherbourg. I like Cherbourg I think its restaurants are heads above Caen (Oustreham) and it is much more a simple drive in.

But then the problem the other side a simple 86 miles or so from Poole to Bristol then onwards into God's own country as in Wales and that takes the gloss out of the journey in that save for one or two dual carriageways it is horrendous.

It is finished round ST LO but no, it will be years before it all connects up I guess with Cherbourg and Caen.

Still, it is not a bad journey - the bypass has made it at least half an hour quicker to get up to Cherbourg if you go up the left hand side on the old 4 voies
