Monday 14 September 2009High Days and HolidaysEvery country in the world has its special national days off - and some have a lot more than others! For most people, these days are something to look forward to, when everything comes to a stop and you can enjoy the pleasure of a shorter work week or a long weekend. Local FestivalsTypically, holidays mark a significant national historic event or a religious festival. As we enter the fourth quarter of the year, find out which holidays - jours fériés - are still in store for you; see the AngloINFO INFOrmation Page Public Holidays. In some countries, a holiday which falls on a weekend is made up for with a day off during the week - this is not the case in France. However, when a public holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, many people (and smaller and family-run businesses) take the Friday or Monday off, turning the weekend into a four-day holiday. This is known as making the bridge, to "faire le pont". Later this week is the Heritage Weekend festival, a Europe-wide event. Not a national holiday, it's a celebration of local history and takes place around 19 and 20 September. Many towns and villages across France will be hosting special events and running guided tours of their own local places of historical and cultural interest - see the AngloINFO What's On Guide or look out for local information on the Journées du Patrimoine website.
